Sometimes when I am out running I get a twinge of discomfort in my foot or knee, my natural response is to pivot my foot slightly in a different direction to alter the balance of pressure.  I assume that the muscles, tendons, or ligaments in the stressed area are either overworked or weak and I need to be redirecting my weight somewhere else as I am pounding the pavement. I am not a physical therapist or personal trainer, so please forgive the layman’s terms.

The term pivot means to turn on or around a central point.  It can also mean a person,thing or factor having a major or central role, function or effect.   The term pivot seems to be used most often in the sport of basketball, but we as humans pivot all the time.  As a believers, we should be making life adjustments or pivots around our central point of Jesus Christ.

How do we do that?  If you are carrying a burden (or burdens) that are causing you stress, you have several pivotal options:

1.  Double Dribble – Could it be a matter of adjusting your schedule in a way that causes you less stress?  Ecclesiastes 3:1The Message (MSG) There’s a Right Time for Everything

2.   The Assist – James 5:16 NKJV,
Confess your trespasses[a] to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.  Have you been living your life holding too much inside?  Sometimes we need to pivot in such a way that the burden is carried and supported by someone else in the body of Christ.

If you’re in leadership, hopefully you have a healthy group of believers around you who guide you when you need to pivot or make a slight adjustment.  You’ll know you have the right team if they speak the truth in love.  The right team players won’t compromise God’s word to suit your comfort zone and they will surely encourage you and be your biggest cheerleaders, even while you are sitting on the bench.

3.  Out of Bounds – Are you even playing on the right court?  Are you questioning everything you are doing and need to have a huddle with your team to see if you should be playing somewhere else?  Sometimes we need to completely re-evaluate and press into God to see if the path we are on is the one He wanted us on in the first place.  Maybe you’re on the right court but playing for the wrong team.  Maybe you need to keep doing what you are doing, just in a different place or setting.  Are you listening to God?  Isaiah 30:21New Life Version (NLV) Your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right or to the left.

3.  Personal Foul –  Have you been allowing too much to be put on your plate and you just need to delegate a few things?  Delegate until you have peace. 

We all want to be on a winning team.  Part of being a winning team and being a healthy team player is being able to pivot quickly and make adjustments when necessary.  Take the time today to confirm your position.  The ball is in your court.
