An Excerpt

I have my 87 year old mother with me this week and life has been quite busy and challenging.  I posted this excerpt from my book Journey to acceptance – spiritual release from food bondage, on my other blog “RevelationsOnTheRun.com” on Nov. 3rd of 2014.  I wanted to repost here on AnaAnnabelle.com because of the importance of understanding how different types of media influence the way we think about ourselves and the world around us.  My book is based on the spiritual aspects of getting free from the life long bondage of weight control issues (and eating disorders). Here is that excerpt one more time:

Below is an excerpt where I share two things that I had to take a break from viewing as I walked along the path of healing and into freedom:

Two things I had to fast for a season in this journey were women’s magazines and cooking shows. I love magazines!  I haven’t cared for the ones that promote sexual promiscuity and total focus on self since I re-dedicated my life back to Christ many years ago.  I love the ones with ideas on how to co-ordinate new outfits for the upcoming seasons, great new recipes, decorating ideas, money strategies and stories of caring people who make a difference in this world, etc.  What you may not realize is that most women’s magazines have a carefully planned agenda. They are designed to take you from wanting to look like the clothing models in the first part of the magazine to comparing yourself to them. Next, about midway through the magazine, are some sort of diet and the healthy eating tips du jour. Then come the stories that tug at your heart and then to top it all off, most magazines end with fattening recipes. It can be quite the emotional roller coaster from cover to cover. Magazines no longer cause me to stumble because now I am aware of the flow and understand the trap.

Regarding watching cooking shows, I have decided to make it an occasional past time.  I am able to do that now without wanting to raid the pantry, but when I was struggling with eating, it only fueled my appetite.

Philippians 3:19 New Living Translation (NLT) says:,

19 They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.

If you struggle with weight issues or an eating disorder, ask God today what thing(s) you may need to give up or just fast for a season until it is no longer a snare.

How have magazines and television shows affected how you feel about yourself?  I would love to hear from you!

Be Blessed
