Proper Form

Many rookies in almost any sport or exercise program leap into it without considering proper form and technique.   This may not be the case for you if you started with the benefit of a personal trainer.  Proper form is so important for many reasons.

Running is not exempt from this rule.  It may seem simple to just get out and run but there is much to consider.  One of the most important rules to avoid fallling is to look about 10-20 feet ahead of you on the ground.  Not only does this help to keep your body in proper form, but it will allow you to see what is coming up ahead.  As I pondered that thought I realized it is the same way in our walk with God (see blog on Longevity part 2).  If we want to stay in step with what God is doing in our lives, we must pay attention to only the steps directly in front of our feet.  We can not look too far ahead or we may not see the obstacles right in front of us and that can cause us to stumble and fall.  It remindes me of Proverbs 4:26-27 in the message version of the bible:
Keep your eyes straight ahead;
ignore all sideshow distractions.
Watch your step,
and the road will stretch out smooth before you.
Look neither right nor left;
leave evil in the dust.

The dictionary definition of form is:  The usual or correct method or procedure.   When an exercise is performed outside of its correct method, we risk bodily injury.  If we are participating in a team sport, we can also risk injuring others as well, due to our own carelessness.  If our form is incorrect, our workout is usually much less powerful and we do not reap the full benefit from putting in the effort.

How does that same principle translate over into my spiritual life?  If I am not walking in the full power of my Christianity, then my input into others’ lives will not reap what it may have otherwise.   What does that look like?

Mark 16:15-20The Message (MSG) tells us:

14-16 Still later, as the Eleven were eating supper, he appeared and took them to task most severely for their stubborn unbelief, refusing to believe those who had seen him raised up. Then he said, “Go into the world. Go everywhere and announce the Message of God’s good news to one and all. Whoever believes and is baptized is saved; whoever refuses to believe is damned.

17-18 “These are some of the signs that will accompany believers: They will throw out demons in my name, they will speak in new tongues, they will take snakes in their hands, they will drink poison and not be hurt, they will lay hands on the sick and make them well.”

19-20 Then the Master Jesus, after briefing them, was taken up to heaven, and he sat down beside God in the place of honor. And the disciples went everywhere preaching, the Master working right with them, validating the Message with indisputable evidence.]

I don’t want to have bad form in my walk with God.  It will only lead to feeling powerless.  2 Timothy, chapter 3 speaks of what happens to us when our Christianity takes on bad form:

2 Timothy 3:5American Standard Version (ASV) 5 holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power therefore. From these also turn away.

We need the Holy Spirit to be our personal trainer.  Don’t walk in half of the power.  As we begin a new week, ask the Holy Spirit to show you where your form could use some correcting.
